"As shown in the accompanying drawing, the leading or material feature of my design consists in the figure of a horse A, mounted by the figure of a soldier in the garb characterizing the "Rough Rider" B, and represented in the act of clearing an elevation in its path, the elevation C containing a circular opening D. A clock-face shows through the opening D, and the ground forming the path on which the horse is moving rises from a longitudinally-curved base F and is represented as irregular, with fantastic leaf designs a at different points upon it and with fantastic leaf designs b about the opening D."
