The construction of the balance (the timekeeping element) was changed several times.
Balance 0: Round cross section brass 2 arms:
The brass rim has a round cross section. Two flat brass arms. Brass safety roller. Examples seen from ca. 1887 - 1888.
Balance 1a: Lead rim with safety roller:
Lead over brass rim, three brass arms, cast lead alloy hub. BRASS SAFETY ROLLER.
Balance 1b: Lead rim with notched balance staff:
Lead over brass rim, three brass arms, cast lead alloy hub. NOTCHED BALANCE STAFF for safety action (no safety roller).
Balance 2: Brass 2 arms thick rim:
Brass balance with two arms. The rim is thicker than the arms. The staff is notched for the safety action.
Balance 3: Brass 3 arms:
Three arm flat balance. The staff is notched for the safety action.
