Baby Ben Type 1a Movement

Baby Ben type 1a movement

Type 1a movement: Time barrel is winding (or safety) type to avoid center pinion damage when the mainspring breaks. This movement is the same thickness as the type 1 movement. The time winding key has a male thread.

The time mainspring is 7/32 inch wide, and does not provide adequate power. Four examples of this movement have been found so far.

Baby Ben type 2 movement

The time mainspring width was increased to 5/16 inch by using a "domed" time barrel bridge to gain height without changing the distance between the front and back movement plates. The wider mainspring was made thinner and longer, thus providing adequate running power for over a day.

Clocks with the type 2 movement are 1/8 inch thicker than those with type 1 or 1a movements.
